The 5 trends in e-commerce
Wijnand Jongen, managing director of the Dutch branche organisation Thuiswinkel.org presented, at the Webwinkel Vakdagen, the 5 most important e-commerce trends in the Netherlands:

1 The retailrevolution

The role of retailers is changing. The question is if it’s the shop against the internet or the shop with internet. This channel conflict is growing and growing. “Comparing products has become a national sport,” concluded Jongen. For the consumer its all about ‘cross-channel retailing’, sais Jongen. ‘On Thursday night you might be a different consumer then Saturday morning, if you have all the time to visit a real store.’

Cross border shopping is currently still very small but it is starting. ‘In 5 to 10 years it will be standard, webshop owners have to prepare for that.’ An example is PixMania; 65 percent of the turnover of this french company comes from abroad. The company is growing fast and shows the potential of pan-European webshops.

2 LongTail

‘Are we at the start or the end of the Long Tail?’ wonders Jongen. ‘The number of webshops is growing greatly. In the Netherlands we have about 17.500. We expect this number to double by 2015. ‘Webshops are opening up quickly but still have to be found. Jongen:’The conversion will decrease, the prices will rise and the ROI will go down. It is all affected by Google, which absolutely is dominant in the market. The question is, if that is good, we worry about that.’

3 The brands are coming

“We are very loyal to our brands. But actually that is stupid. The web takes care of the strengthening of brands of manufacturers. Why would you check out a store if you can get the information you need directly from the manufacturer” according to Jongen.

4 Mobile Commerce

“Also in 2010 mobile commerce will break through. I say this in a silly way because we have been saying this since 2001” sais Jongen. Many consumers buy online via their mobile phones. American consumers already use their mobiles for multichannel retailing. At the same time, sais Jongen, mobile payment still has to develop largely.

5 New kid on the block: Social Commerce

“The consumer is holy, they take over. The can read productreviews and visit social media more and more often.” sais Jongen. There is a line between with happens online and what happens in the ‘real’ stores. What the ROI of social commerce is, is still hard to say but companies are experimenting a lot.
